Moon Myths
The Story of Annigan:
(Myth from Greenland)
Annigan would chase his sister, Malina, around the sky all
the time. He would chase her so much he
would forget to eat and become thinner.
When he would become hunger he would disappear for three days and return
full to start the chase of his sister again. To stay try and stay away from her
brother Malina would try and only come out during the day.
Idea for Integrating into the classroom: Students could write their own myths or
legands to help explain the moon phases.
Chang’e: (Chinese
myth)
Chang and her husband were immortal, but because they became
to greedy they were mad mortal. They
took a pill to become more immortal again and Chang took to much. She ended up floating to the moon and was
stuck forever.
Idea for Integrating into the classroom: Students could research other myths they have
heard and see if there is any scientific proof.
An idea would be: “more people go
to the emergency room on a full moon”
Integrating Historical Space Exploration into the Classroom:
There are many ways a teacher can integrate historical space
explorations into a classroom. There are
many great websites that teach students about space history. Some examples are:
· http://www.history.com/topics/space-race
· http://www.spacekids.co.uk/spacehistory/
· http://www.kidsdiscover.com/space-exploration-for-kids
For my classroom I would let kids make class books that
inform others about different historical events that happen based on space
explorations. I would assign students into
groups and each group would have their own topic to research. I will already have printouts, websites, books,
and articles ready so students can become “experts on their topics.” Students will create books for the classroom
library so their classmates can learn more about different space
explorations. I could also have students
create presentations to share with their classmates explorations with the class.
